Hedgehog Bakes a Cake - recipe

The class and I read the story, Hedgehog Bakes a Cake by: Maryann Macdonald. At the back of the story, there is a recipe for a yellow cake. If you would like to bake the cake with your child here is the recipe:

Ingrediants
3/4 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
3 eggs
1 1/4 c. self-rising flour
1 tsp. vanilla extract (optional)

Steps to bake cake:
1. Ask an adult to set the oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Butter an 9 in. round pan.
3. Mix butter and sugar together in a bowl.
4. Add eggs one by one.
5. If desired, add vanilla.
6. Mix in flour.
7. Put batter into pan and bake for 30 minutes.
8. Eat warm with a glass of milk.

Enjoy! :)

  1. this is a wonderful book and a wonderful--and extremely simple-- cake. My son loved the book as a child and we made the cake several times. I am making it today for his birthday. It is that kind of cake! You will love it forever. Add strawberries and whipped cream or just have it as is. Delicious.

  2. Thank you Mrs. Ashbaugh. We read this book to our daughter, now 23, when she was a little girl. She loved the book, and it sparked her interest in baking. We now are going to bake this cake for our granddaughter's first birthday.
